UConn College Advising Corps

College Adviser

University of Connecticut College Advising Corps (UConnCAC) is an affiliate of College Advising Corps, a national non-profit organization that works to increase the rates of college enrollment and completion among low-income, first-generation college and underrepresented high school students. In partnership with AmeriCorps, UConnCAC seeks to hire recent college graduates to serve as college advisers in high-need high schools. As members of a national movement, UConn College Advising Corps college advisers will help students in underserved communities realize their dreams of attending college. College advisers will report toCAC Director and to an on-site liaison in their respective high school placement sites. Advisers will be expected to tailor programs and activities to support the achievement of school-based targets related to Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to increase college enrollment and persistence for students. Advisers will undergo a mandatory month-long training in advance of their appointment from expert professionals on topics of college access, admissions, financial aid and scholarships, test preparation, and working with diverse populations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be a recent college graduate within the last five years, with an earned bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to make a commitment for a full-time Monday-Friday position.
  • Be able to report to an assigned public high schools in the state of Connecticut.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and some experience working in a college or an educational environment.
  • Some experience working with teenagers, community organizations, summer and/or academic programs.
  • Demonstrate maturity, good judgment, patience, and commitment to providing educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time position. Advisers will undergo a mandatory training in advance of their appointment from expert professionals. Successful completion of a criminal background check and Minor Protection Training are required.

Upward Bound and ConnCAP

Summer Instructor

The UConn CAPS Pre-College Programs (Upward Bound & College Awareness and Preparation Program (ConnCAP)) are looking for qualified instructors interested in improving educational opportunities for Connecticut high school students. Our programs work with high school students who are seeking a challenging and exciting academic opportunity and who have the potential to continue their education beyond high school. An integral part of our programs are the intensive summer programs, which provide academic instruction designed to give rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students the opportunity to experience a college environment while obtaining supplemental high school level academic preparation. The pre-college summer programs will be held in-person in Storrs, Stamford, Hartford, Avery Point and Waterbury campuses.

We are seeking applications from qualified instructors for the following subjects:

  • English (Literature and Composition)
  • Mathematics (Geometry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus/Calculus)
  • Science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with a lab)
  • Social Studies
  • Spanish
  • Enrichment seminars such as Study Skills, SAT, and College Preparation.

The program dates are from mid-June to the end of July 2023 (dates vary by program).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach two-three class sessions either in the mornings or in the afternoons.
  • Prepare and present materials for assigned subject area.
  • Be responsible for all class preparation, requirements, grading and homework assignments.
  • Keep attendance, monitor class behavior, complete students conduct reports as needed.
  • Work closely with an assigned class tutor.
  • Provide mid-program and final student evaluations.
  • Attend pre-program orientation and bi-weekly staff meetings, and other program events.

Additional responsibilities vary according to the class and time commitment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with adolescents in a multi-cultural educational setting and teaching experience in the assigned subject area.
  • Preference will be given to instructors who are certified in their subject area.

Selected candidates will be invited to an interview during the months of March and April. A criminal background check and a Minor Protection Training are required. Summer Hall Coordinator

The UConn College Awareness and Preparation Program (ConnCAP) is seeking applications for a summer Hall Coordinator to work with high school students participating in a four-week residential summer program.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

ConnCAP is a college preparation to program that works with high school students from Windham and Hartford, CT. The program provides students the opportunity to participate in a five-week intensive academic program. Students take courses, participate in extracurricular activities, and develop skills to help them succeed in high school and beyond. The commitment to this program is from June 19-July 18, 2023. POSITION DESCRIPTION

Hall Coordinators must make a commitment June 19 to July 18, 2023—specific dates will be discussed; training is mandatory. Hall Coordinators work very closely with the permanent program staff to manage all daily operations in the residence halls. Hall Coordinators supervise the residential staff and students in the program; enforce rules and regulations. Additional duties include coordination of student events, field trips, and extracurricular activities. The Hall Coordinator position is very active and intensive. The position requires a high level of organization, an ability to work effectively with others, and involves being available 24 hours a day throughout the duration of the summer program. This is an in-person residential program. This position is a temporary and does not include benefits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be an upper-level undergraduate student or a recent graduate.
  • Some experience as a Residential Assistant or in related overnight programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience working with teenagers, community organizations, and/or academic programs.
  • The ability to demonstrate maturity, good judgment, patience, and commitment to providing educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to providing a safe, supportive, and fun environment for students and staff to perform at their best.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or graduate student status.
  • Experience as an Assistant or Hall Director/Coordinator in Residential Life, camps, or in other related programs.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of UConn’s residential policies.
  • Administrative and organizational skills.

Summer Residential Tutor/Counselor

DESCRIPTION

The Tutor/Counselor position involves a four-week commitment (from June 19-July 14, 2023) to a residential program at UConn, Storrs. Tutor/Counselors work with high school students from Sunday evenings until Friday afternoon. The Tutor/Counselor position is very intensive and involves being available 24 hours a day. Tutor/Counselors also assist faculty members in small classes, provide tutoring in the evenings, help lead recreational and cultural activities, supervise students in the resident halls, enforce the program rules and regulations, and act as advisors and mentors to the students in the program. Tutor/Counselors must participate in a mandatory training prior to students arriving to campus.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, good academic standing, and administrative and organizational skills
  • Academic competence in at least one academic area: English, Math, Science, and Foreign Languages.
  • Some experience working with teenagers, community organizations, and/or academic programs
  • Demonstrate maturity, good judgment, patience, and commitment to providing educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds.

Qualified applicants will be invited for an interview. Interviews will be held during the months of March and April. Priority will be given to applications received by March 20, 2023.
The position includes a salary of $2,100.00 plus room and board.

Summer Non-Residential Tutor/Counselor

The UConn Pre-College Programs: Upward Bound & College Awareness and Preparation (ConnCAP) programs provide college preparation to high school students from target high schools in Norwich, Stamford and Naugatuck. Students participate in an intensive non-residential program at UConn’s campuses in Stamford, Avery Point, and Waterbury. Students take academic and enrichment courses, participate in extracurricular activities and field trips, and develop skills to help them succeed in high school and beyond.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Academic competence in at least one academic area such as English, mathematics, science, and social students.
• Experience working with teenagers, community organizations, and/or academic programs.
• Demonstrates maturity, good judgment, patience, and commitment to providing educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience working with adolescents from multicultural backgrounds.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise students and lead activities related to culture, sports, mental health, self-care, poetry, dance, and/or other areas of personal and student interest.
  • Provide individual and group tutoring sessions for 1 –3 hours a day.
  • Assist faculty members with class instruction. Enforce and personally abide by program rules and regulations.
  • Maintain privacy and/or confidentiality when handling participant, staff, and community incidents and conflicts.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings and other events.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned and as needed.

DATES AND COMPENSATION

Program dates are mid-June to July 28, 2023 (training is required prior to the program dates). Priority will be given to applications received by March 20, 2023. Only selected applicants will be invited for an interview, to be held in March and April. A criminal background check and Minor Protection Training are mandatory. The compensation is $18.00 per hour to work approximately 4 to 7 hours a day Monday- Friday.
