Upward Bound Math & Science helps eligible high school students deepen their interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while preparing for college.

UBMS combines college preparation with opportunities to explore STEM disciplines and careers. Students strengthen their academic foundation, connect their interests to future possibilities, and build the skills needed to pursue a college degree.
Supported by the U.S. Department of Education and the University of Connecticut, the program serves students at New London High School, Norwich Free Academy, and Rockville High School.

Academic Growth
Build stronger foundations in mathematics, science, writing, research, and other subjects that support high school and college success.
STEM Exploration
Explore STEM fields through hands-on activities, workshops, projects, and exposure to college majors and career possibilities.
College Readiness
Navigate college admissions, financial aid, career planning, academic expectations, and the transition to life after high school.
Personal Development
Develop leadership, teamwork, confidence, communication, self-advocacy, and healthy approaches to personal growth.
Community & Family
Connect with peers and mentors while families receive information and support to help students pursue their goals.
Six weeks to expand what feels possible
The summer experience brings students to campus for focused learning, college preparation, and enrichment.
- Complete foundational and STEM-related coursework
- Strengthen research, reasoning, and problem-solving skills
- Prepare for college admissions and academic expectations
- Develop a well-rounded college admissions profile
- Participate in personal, cultural, and recreational enrichment
Program eligibility
Eligible students must meet federal program requirements and:
- Want to attend a two- or four-year college
- Demonstrate an academic or personal need for program services
- Meet first-generation college and/or household-income criteria
- Meet federal citizenship or residency requirements
- Be between ages 13 and 19 and attend a target school
- Demonstrate an interest in mathematics, science, or related careers
Cost: There is no charge to participate.
